Asia

Several trips folded into one collection — rice terraces before sunrise, night markets, river towns, and the long green quiet of Borneo.

Green rice terraces in morning mist with a temple roof on the ridge
Central Bali, morning

From the notebook

Bali is best at six in the morning, before the day gets loud. The terraces hold the mist a while, and the farmers are already halfway through their work.

In Vietnam I travelled mostly by train and ate mostly on plastic stools, which remains the correct way to do both.

Borneo taught me patience: hours on a slow brown river for ten minutes of orangutans in the canopy.
